As we gear up for the 10th anniversary of the Railway City Road Races, excitement is building in St. Thomas! What started in 2014 as a small local event, rebranded from Lace Up for STEGH, has grown into a beloved community tradition. Thanks to the vision and dedication of a small group of runners, led by our late fire chief Rob Broadbent, the event has become a fixture in the city’s annual calendar.
Rob’s passion for running and his commitment to the community were the driving forces behind the expansion of the event. His introduction of the half marathon was a game-changer, setting the stage for what has become one of the most anticipated events in the area. Today, the Railway City Road Races continues to offer something for everyone, with a 5km, 10km, Half Marathon, and the family-friendly 1km Choo Choo Challenge.
This year’s races will be especially meaningful as we honor Rob’s legacy. The half marathon, named in his memory, will once again challenge runners to push their limits while reflecting on the impact Rob had on our community. You’ll notice the “RB” initials on race memorabilia—a simple but powerful reminder of the man who helped make this event what it is today.Over the years, the race has evolved in other ways as well. Originally supporting the St. Thomas Elgin General Foundation, the event now raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas Elgin, continuing its tradition of giving back to the community.
We’ve seen this race adapt and thrive through the years, even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the event went virtual. Now, as we return to an in-person format for the third year post COVID, with the race starting and finishing along the paths behind the CASO Station and the Elgin Railway Museum, we’re reminded of the resilience and spirit of our community.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual jogger, or a family looking for a fun day out, the Railway City Road Races has something for you. We can’t wait to see everyone on race day as we celebrate ten years of running, community, and the memory of a leader who inspired us all.Join us in making this milestone year the best one yet!
