Building a More Sustainable Race Day

Every step we take as runners connects us to something bigger—our community, our health, and the environment around us. We believe that protecting that environment is just as important as crossing the finish line. That’s why sustainability is something we actively build into race day and everything leading up to it.
How RCRR is Running More Sustainably
Creating a memorable race experience doesn’t have to come at the expense of the planet. Here are a few ways we’re working to reduce our environmental impact:
Smarter Hydration
We’re proud to source our water from Simply Pure Water, a zero-waste refillery right here in St. Thomas. By choosing refillable water systems over single-use plastic bottles, we’re significantly cutting down on race-day waste. Plus, you get a cool souvenir to go with your medal!

Eco-Friendly Course Markings
In 2025, we started using biodegradable route arrows on our courses. They guide runners even more effectively than chalk or spray paint on the pavement, and don't leaving a lasting impact on the environment.
Reusing What We Can
From kilometre markers to directional signs, we make a conscious effort to reuse materials year after year. It’s a simple step that makes a big difference in reducing unnecessary waste.
How You Can Be a More Sustainable Runner
Whether you’re training solo or lining up on race day, small choices add up. Here are a few easy ways to make your running routine more eco-friendly:
Bring Your Own Bottle
Skip disposable cups when possible and carry a reusable water bottle or hydration pack during training runs.
Choose Quality Gear That Lasts
Instead of frequently replacing cheap gear, invest in durable running shoes and apparel that can go the distance. Bonus points for brands that prioritize sustainability.
Check out The Run Parlour in London or Clinton for some great sustainable running gear!
Plan Greener Routes
Stick to local trails, sidewalks, or parks you can reach without driving. Not only is it better for the environment, but it also helps you explore your community in new ways.
Reduce Race-Day Waste

On race day, be mindful of what you take and what you toss. Only grab what you need at aid stations and dispose of waste properly—or better yet, carry it with you until you find recycling.
Carpool or Bike to the Start Line
If you’re able, share a ride with a fellow runner or bike to the event to reduce emissions.
Re-wear and Repurpose
That race shirt you already have? It’s still a great shirt. Re-wearing gear and repurposing old race items helps cut down on overconsumption. You want people do know how long you've been doing this, right?
Sustainability is a journey, and we know there’s always more we can do. As RCRR continues to grow, we’re committed to finding new ways to lessen our environmental impact while delivering the race experience our community knows and loves. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to run faster or farther, it’s to ensure that the roads, trails, and communities we run through are protected for generations to come.
